But as I have no way of knowing your level of programming skills or knowledge I thought it better not to assume too much. No doubt some of what I've said here you already know. That advice may not be as appropriate for a text-based MMO game as for a graphically designed game, but I suspect it is.
All this is assuming you don't already know how to program in BASIC.įinally, while I don't want to discourage you, you should probably read the info at: I doubt that a game written in BASIC would be suitable for an MMO game (as in most versions it's an interpreted language and therefore quite slow), but using it to learn string manipulation techniques (string = text) might be quite useful to you. You might look into downloading Liberty BASIC or look for a book like "BASIC Programming for Dummies" which, I think, includes Liberty BASIC on a CD-ROM that comes with the book. The old BASIC computer language is a high level language which, in most of it's incarnations, allows some string programming and parsing that would be useful skills to learn for programming any sort of text based game. And find a good tutorial to begin with as trying to learn programming initially just by reading the language's reference guide will likely put you to sleep at best or discourage you and drive you crazy at worst! Try a web search on "Python" or "Python game programming" to get some info. There are quite a few books about Python as well as online tutorials and Python programming reference resources. You might want to look into the Python language which is quite powerful yet relatively easy to learn. If you haven't actually done any programming yet I suggest you not wait until you start college. Maybe there's something there you can use though I can't say how well Lua would function strictly as a tool for designing a stand alone text based MMORPG.
Lots of info about it here as well as a download link for the free game engine: ĥ) Check out the links on this site devoted to the programming language Lua which, as you'll see, has been used to create at least substantial parts of commercially successful games:
If the software does not have the requirements you need you can program it with the source." No previous knowledge is necessary because Eclipse uses a simple point and click system. "Eclipse is a free to use 2D game engine. I didn't find anything else about suggested tools for creating text based MMORPG's but thought some of the following links might possibly be of interest to you.Ĥ) Check out the free MMORPG 2D game engine known as Eclipse. Maybe there's something below that will be of use to you or enable you to contact someone with more specialized knowledge about this topic.ġ) Check out this page (and be sure to look down near the bottom of the page for the section labeled "Similar Topics" to see what's there: Since no one else has responded to your request I thought I'd provide this info (derived from a web search).
